Human Development Consultant Shares Her Experiences of Moving from the Nation's Capital to Rural South Carolina
Orangeburg, SC (PRWEB) April 1, 2006 -- Human development consultant Marcia Davis Taylor shares her personal experience of a family relocation from the Metropolitan Washington, DC Area to rural South Carolina. Her insights and experiences can be found in the April 2006 “Self” column of Lifestyle CEO.
According to demographers Kenneth M. Johnson and Calvin L. Beale, “Most rural areas of the United States are now growing at the fastest rate in more than 20 years. Rural population gains between 1990 and 2000 have been both extremely widespread and substantial. Fueled by an influx of migrants from urban areas and fewer people leaving, rural gains since 1990 are near record levels. They reflect a sharp reversal of the trend of the 1980s, when most rural (non-metropolitan) areas lost population. This is only the second period of widespread non-metropolitan growth in 80 years.”
Other reports, including “Rural Renaissance: One Scenario for America in the Nineties,” suggests that urban dwellers are leaving cities because of crime, pollution, expensive housing, dangerous schools and stress. Rural areas are increasingly able to provide well paying jobs and improved schools, and have historically offered a lower cost of living, especially housing. Most rural areas offer a slower pace than urban areas, leading to less “hustle and bustle” and decreased stress.
Marcia’s monthly “Self” column focuses on helping women successfully integrate all facets of their lives, with an emphasis on maximizing their potential as individuals.
