Will Haynie to Cover South Carolina Regatta Scene for Carolina Currents Magazine
Charleston, S.C. (PRWEB) October 1, 2006 -- Will Haynie has joined Carolina Currents - The North and South Carolina Sailor's Magazine as the South Carolina editor and advertising sales representative. A lifelong sailor who grew up sailing on Charleston’s historic harbor, he is also the sailing columnist for the Charleston Post & Courier and races in Charleston Ocean Racing Association (CORA) events as well as local dinghy regattas.
As an experienced professional writer, Will has published more than 400 newspaper opinion columns for two North Carolina dailies and is the author of the book "When My Cell Phone Blinks ‘ROAM’ Do I Have a Call From Italy?"
“I have a lifelong love of sailing, and I love writing, so what could be better than writing about sailing?” Will said. “The Carolinas are hugely popular sailing destinations for both cruising and racing, and Carolina Currents fills a niche that has been waiting to be filled for a long time. The positive response from South Carolina sailors has been overwhelming.”
Editor and Publisher Rob Lucey said that joining forces with Will enables Carolina Currents to fulfill its mission of entertaining, informing and connecting sailors across the Carolinas. "We're based in Oriental, the Sailing Capital of North Carolina," he said. "Having someone of Will's caliber in the Sailing Capital of South Carolina ensures the magazine's success."
Returning to Charleston in 2002 after six years in the North Carolina mountains, Will began crewing in CORA events on a friend’s Olson 30.
“I noticed all the commitment of time, talent and assets to a sport that is ingrained in the Lowcountry’s heritage, but there was no media coverage. So I decided to do something, and my weekly sailing column is the result," he said. "I was looking for a venue for an expanded version of the column when Rob and Jo Lucey approached me about joining forces with Carolina Currents. It’s hard to describe how elated I am to be doing this!”
Having Will in Charleston enables Carolina Currents to provide first-hand coverage of upcoming major regattas such as the Sunfish World Championships, Charleston Race Week, the Charleston to Bermuda Race, the 2007 E Scow Nationals, and the historic Rockville Regatta.
The first bi-monthly issue of Carolina Currents will be published at the end of October with 30,000 copies distributed free through marinas, chandleries, yacht clubs, sailing clubs, boat shows, boat brokers and other nautical gathering spots along the coasts and inland lakes. An online edition, live since June at www.CarolinaCurrents.com, provides more timely and in-depth news and regatta coverage.
